International Travel Insurance and Cruises
When we think of international travel insurance we almost automatically assume that we will need coverage to pay for medical bills upon treatment of a medical emergency. Well, if that is the image that you have in your head…congrats! You have created a mental image of the most common need for travel insurance. But, if you feel this is the only instance that the need for medical insurance will rear its head then you have erred because you are thinking to narrowly. For example, most people would never think of getting travel insurance to cover a medical emergency on a cruise ship.
Part of the reason for this is the fact that cruise lines often feel secure. There is good reason for this: cruise lines cover virtually ever base to make sure that the passengers of the cruise line are provided with all the comforts of home and are made to feel at ease. One of the comforts they take into consideration is the health and welfare of the passengers and this includes having a doctor and trained medical staff on board. HOWEVER…the costs are high. In fact, the medical treatment on a cruise ship will probably cost more than any other location on the earth!
As much as it is distasteful to say so the fact of the matter is that cruise ships know they "got you" when you are aboard a ship and they have a tendency to ridiculously increase prices on common items such that could be purchased at a much cheaper cost. Now, while some may feel that this is a terrible thing to do when it comes to medical treatment, the fact remains that cruise lines overcharge significantly for medical treatment. So, you have the option of paying the excessive fees or you can seek a low cost premium for a cruise medical insurance policy. Clearly, the few dollars that you spend on the policy will save you a tremendous amount in the long run and is highly advisable.
